For one day in April Birchview Elementary is transformed into a college campus. K-5 students are given an afternoon to learn something entirely new and take classes that they register for. I can tell you that these classes and the people teaching them make it a lot more exciting than I remember my college classes being. Classes like Dentistry, Cooking Healthy Snacks, Gardening, Chemistry, and Movie Making are offered. It’s pretty awesome!

Kids select two classes and spend a Friday afternoon learning hands-on what these topics are all about. Parents and other community volunteers teach the classes and really make it special for the kids. For our own kids, it has been a school highlight and something they look forward to each year.

For a 3rd straight year, Wheely Good has taught a class on bike maintenance and safety on the road. We have such a blast each year interacting with the students. The kids learn how to change a flat tire, the right way to wear a helmet, rules of the road, basic bike maintenance and of course, always a favorite, how to trick out your bike. Kids love adding zip ties to their wheels; converting an ordinary bicycle into a motorcycle sounding hot rod. We also had fun this year demonstrating how not to ride a bike by some hilarious demonstrations by Professor Parker.

We’re thankful to be a part of this and love the chance to work with these bright students. My hope is that they learned ways to ride safer, care for their bike and leave with the joy of simply riding a bike.
